This Be the Verse

At the age of 16, I was the typical self-absorbed teenager. I had all these quotes artfully written on note cards and tacked up on a bulletin board in my room. On of them was part of a poem called This Be the Verse by Philip Larkin:

They fuck you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra, just for you.

I thought it was pretty funny- my dad, however, did not. He flipped the note card over and wrote some sarcastic comment about my youth. Understandable. In looking for this quote to post as part of this entry, I found that it was actually the first stanza of a poem. The rest follows.

But they were fucked up in their turn
By fools in old-style hats and coats,
Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half at one another's throats.

Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don't have any kids yourself.

I find it quite interesting that you found that there is more to that poem. Maybe a little late...or maybe just when you need it most.

Yeah, I like what the 2nd stanza adds, but don't really agree with the last half of the 3rd. Get out early as you can? What- like kill yourself? Nah dog, that's horrible advice. And while I so often find myself hoping that certain people will decide to not have children {or be rendered unable due to natural selection} I can't really agree with that either.

good times. you found the part of the poem you wanted when you were a teenager and when you grew up the poem matured with you.
